Default p29 vtec-e build

Hello! I am currently building a high compression vtec-e D16. This is for my '89 sedan that I named the "Golden Turd". It's a family car that needs low end grunt and enough power to get good mpg. I currently have a d15y8 mini me in the Turd but that just isn't enough.

I started with a tired y7 block. The cylinders were a little rough so I had the cylinders bored to 75.5mm. Lee's machine does good work!

I picked up some 75.5mm p29s pistons, NPR rings and King bearings. Here's a p29 piston on a y7 rod

Here's the kicker, the y5 vtec head! This head has vtec-e, which opens just one intake valve until vtec activation when both intake valves open. A little different than standard vtec but the intake lobe is rumored to be larger than a stock y8 vtec lobe. Either way roller rockers FTW!

The complete set up is...
75.5mm d16y7 block
p29 pistons on y7 rods
stock y7 crank
modded y7 oil pump
y8 head gasket
d16y5 head
oem timing belt
ebay 4-2-1 header
2.5" mandrel bent exhaust
2.5" oem style muffler
2.5" intake
56mm throttle body
d16z6 intake manifold
stock fuel/ignition systems
chipped pm6 ecu
lc1/ostrich2/BRE

This combo has a static compression ratio of 13.24:1 but when you factor in my elevation of 6,025 feet above sea level the compression drops to 12:1. The highest octane we have is 91 but e85 is becoming plentiful if 91 isn't enough. Comments/suggestions welcome!

Looks awesome!

I have a question though, the cross hatch angle seems a little much. Do you know what angle it is?

I take that back, I was curious so I traced it into eMachineShop and it looks to be around 20-30 degrees.

The machinist told me they used the appropriate cross hatch for the rings I supplied to him. I am unsure of the actual angle of the cross hatch though so thanks for finding that out. Thanks for looking!

The actual number doesn't matter as long as they followed the rings x-hatch guidelines.

Awesome build. I suggest ARP head studs too, and watch it when you go to lower altitudes!

Thats why this is called "OneCamOnly" . For some its not about the price. Its about the pride in which they take in building a Single Cam motor that stomps on all others. Sure it might cost a little more money for someone to get what they want out of a Single Cam motor. But doing a swap is too easy.Step up!

Honda recommends 60 degrees, so it looks quite correct. I'd really love to have Y5 head too.. Are your pistons the NPR types with added compression height?

:TU: I really like the idea

Thanks for the comments Jesse. I appreciate it. Don, your sedan is my inspiration to stay all motor. The p29's worked out great for you so I had to give them a try. Check out the difference between a oem pm7 piston versus my Nippon p29

Much deeper and wider valve reliefs in Nippons, I think they're the 30mm CH type. Compare them side by side, piston pit at the same height.. Are Nippons 1mm taller than OEM?

I'm not sure so I will take some more detailed pics and measurements today to find out! Thanks for commenting Rushi. Haven't heard much from you lately
