I have a mpg project car with a bit of a transmission issue.
The car is an 80 Tercel/Corolla 1.5L 5-Speed I got for dirt cheap, with 181k miles.
Yes...I know, this is primarily a Honda site, but I know there are a great deal of knowledgeable individuals on this forum and I feel more comfortable here....+ it is a SOHC ;)

It runs through all gears just fine, until you get to 5th. 5th gear will engage, but the shifter will kick back into neutral (actually sticks where you feel the syncronizer, when its almost engaged), after which it will still be in 5th and driving along fine. Once I attempt to pull it from this neutral position it is fairly difficult to remove and will not engage any other gear, until after I have stopped and put it into reverse (then it's back to normal).

I will add that the transmission shifts very smooth and clutch feels great...I actually havent heard a single grind yet.

Any experience or suggestions on this would be very appreciated.
    Thank you.

Is it a cable shifter? maybe linkage binding issue?
